Details of semi-final:
Date: 23rd February 2010
Time: 8.45am-11am. Presentation starts at 9am sharp.
Venue: SIM HQ 1.07 (holding room), SIM HQ1.08

Teams who made it to the semi-finals have been notified by email.

Teams which submitted their written proposal but did not made it to the semi final round have been invited, via email, to sit-in to view the top 5 teams present before the judges at the semi-final.

No experience? Want to learn more about what a fund manager does? Come attend the talk held by Fundsupermart on 21th January 2010 at LT1.11 (SIM HQ) at 3.15pm.
Admission to this talk is strictly by advance registration. However, students who are registering for the Next Fund Manager Competition will be given priority to attend this talk.

The Next Fund Manager Competition 2010

The Next Fund Manager Assessment Criteria

1) Preliminary Rounds

Your client has given you a virtual budget of ten million dollars. Assume the role of a fund manager and advise your client how you would invest this money. Write a report for your client on how you plan to invest the funds and justify your choices. You are to indicate your selected client’s profile and base your justifications on it.
You will have more than 450 funds to choose from
www.fundsupermart.com. You are also allowed to invest up to 30% of the fund’s portfolio in individual stocks. The word limit for the report is 2000.

1.1) Prelim Report Assessment

You will be judged based on the following criteria:

Report Presentation 10%
• Report Style, Word limit, Coherence, Formatting, Citation

Content of the report 90%
• 1) Investment Basics 20%

  • The participating teams shall define all of the below-mentioned, and explain why they are important.

· Investment

· Asset allocation

· Diversification

· Portfolio rebalancing

  • The participating teams shall describe the nature of different asset classes such as stocks, bonds and derivatives.

  • The participating teams shall also describe how the different types of unit trusts and how unit trusts work, in terms of the distributors, the fund house, and the 1day 1pricing strategy.

• 2) Risk profile analysis 10%
- Describe how to analyse an individual’s risk appetite.

• 3) Market Outlook 20%

• 4) Fund’s Strategy 40%
- Includes both overall and backup strategy

Citations are needed where appropriate

2) Semi Finals

The top 5 teams from the Prelims will be selected to compete in the semifinal round. These 5 teams will make a presentation to the panel of judges appointed by the respective university investment club.

You will be judged based on the following:

1. Presentation skills 20%
2. Content of presentation: 50%

- Points listed in the prelim assessment criteria
3. Q&A 30%

3) Other Information

All teams are encouraged to attend the talk by Fundsupermart.

All participants are to note that they are to cite their sources for information. You can use any
style you wish. Teams will be heavily penalized if they plagiarize.

PRELIMINARY ROUND QUESTION

Please write a report on how you plan to invest the funds and the justifications for yourdecision. The report should not exceed 2000 words.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

Eligibility
This competition is open to all full time undergraduates enrolled in any degree programme at Singapore Institute of Management (SIM), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), National University of Singapore (NUS), and Singapore Management University (SMU).

Team Formation
Each team will consist of 3 people. Participants are not allowed to form teams across different
schools and/or category.

Submitted Report
The word limit for the written report is 2,000 words, excluding any tables and charts. All reports are to be prepared in word doc. format. The written report is to be submitted in Times News Roman font, font size 12. All reports are to be submitted online to tnfm_inc@hotmail.com. They will be scanned for plagiarism. Any reports with severe plagiarism will be penalized. Thus, please indicate any source of citations and references where appropriate. Late submissions will not be accepted.

PLEASE SUBMIT LATEST YOUR WRITTEN PROPOSAL LATEST BY 7th Febuary 2010 5.00 PM.

Presentation
5 shortlisted teams will enter into the semi- finals. In this round, the teams are required to present their report to a panel of judges. They will be a question-and-answer (Q & A) session after the presentation.
